The G. Raymond Chang Caribbean Fellowship program supports clinicians from the West Indies, the islands of the former British West Indies, interested in pursuing academic Internal Medicine subspecialty training at the University of Toronto
Nikolas Deal-Laroda, BSc MBBS DM
2024-2026
Dr Nikolas Deal-Laroda completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Respirology at the University of Toronto.
Following his fellowship, Nikolas returned to Nassau Bahamas where he is a practicing Internist at the Princess Margaret Hospital within the Public Hospitals Authority.
Samantha Grant, BSc MBBS DM
2024 - 2026
Dr Samantha Grant completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Gastroenterology at UofT.
Following her fellowship, Samantha returned to Jamiaca where she is a practicing Internist at the Spanish Town Hospital, a government hospital which serves the parish of St Catherine.
Ryan Brooks, MBBS DM
2021 - 2023
Dr Ryan Brooks completed a one-year clinical fellowship in hospital medicine through the UHN-Sinai Hospital Medicine program, followed by an additional one-year fellowship in Obstetrics Medicine at UofT. He also completed the MTL-SONO course, Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society.
Ryan is currently Assistant Professor, Dept of Medicine, Queen's University, and staff hospitalist, Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Ontario. Previously, Ryan was a practicing Internist, Spanish Town Hospital, Jamaica.
Delansie Lawrence, BSc MBBS DM
2020 - 2022
Dr Delansie Lawrence completed a two-year subspecialty fellowship in Rheumatology at UofT. This fellowship was unique in that Delansie completed the RCSPC accredited Year 4-5 fellowship program, and was therefore eligible to sit for the Rheumatology certifying examination.
Following his fellowship and Royal College certification, Delansie returned to his hometown of Montego Bay Jamaica, where he now practices as a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Delansie regularly collaborates with rheumatology colleagues across Jamaica, who were also supported by the Chang Fellowship previously.
Taneisha McGhie, MBBS DM
2015 - 2017
Dr Taneisha McGhie completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Rheumatology at UofT.
Following her fellowship, Taneisha returned to Jamaica, where she practices as a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, and Associate Lecturer in the Dept of Medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
Taneisha founded the Lupus Support Group-Western Jamaica which extends the reach of the Lupus Foundation of Jamaica, and she previously sat on the Board of the Directors for the Caribbean Association of Rheumatology.
Karlene Hagley MBBS DM
2014 - 2016
Dr Karlene Hagley completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Rheumatology at UofT.
Following her fellowship, Karlene returned to Jamaica, where she practices as a Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist in the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine, Jamaica.
Tamara Thompson, MBBS DM
2012 - 2014
Dr Tamara Thompson completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Internal Medicine, with special interest in Infectious Diseases, at UofT.
Following her fellowship, Tamara returned to Jamaica, where she practices as a Consultant Physician in St Andrew, Jamaica.
Tamara is one of only two adult Infectious Diseases specialists in clinical practice in Jamaica. Her areas of clinical interest include chronic infections, HIV, and Tuberculosis.
Corey Forde, MBBS DM
2014 - 2015
Dr The Most Honourable Corey Forde completed a one-year clinical fellowship in Internal Medicine, with special interest in Infectious Diseases, at UofT. Following his fellowship, he returned to Christ Church, Barbados. He has since returned to complete an observership in Antimicrobial Stewardship at UHN, supporting the development of a similar program in the Caribbean.
He is Director of Clinical and Diagnostic Services and Lead for Infection, Prevention, and Control, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown; Chief Technical Advisor to the Prime Minster of Barbados on antimicrobial resistance; and invited member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Antimicrobial Resistance and their International Travel and Health guideline development group for COVID-19.
In recognition of his organization and delivery of a Caribbean response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Corey was conferred a title of honour by the British Monarchy.
Mahiri Bromfield, MBBS DM
2011 - 2012
Dr. Mahiri Bromfield completed a one-year clinical fellowship in Renal Pathology at UofT. She is Lecturer, Dept of Medicine, University of the West Indies, Mona.
Following her fellowship, Dr. Bromfield returned to Jamaica where she practices as a Consultant Pathologist - Anatomical Pathology at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Francene Gayle, MBBS DM
2009 - 2011
Dr Francene Gayle completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Neurology at UofT. She went on to complete an additional one-year Stroke fellowship at the University of Ottawa. She is Adjunct Assistant Professor, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Gayle is a Stroke Neurologist and current Medical Stroke Director at Andrews Memorial Hospital, Kingston Jamaica, where she serves as its Chief Medical Officer.
Francene also serves as Chief Medical Officer for Everbrook Limited, a private healthcare quality consulting and neurology practice in Jamaica dedicated to elevating the standard of care for patients with complex neurological disorders.

Sheray Ward-Chin, MBBS DM
2006 - 2008
Dr. Sheray Ward-Chin completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Medical Oncology at UofT. She is Lecturer in the Dept of Medicine, University of the West Indies, Mona.
Dr. Ward-Chin is a Consultant, University Hospital of the West Indies, and founding member of the Island Medical Specialists group in Kingston Jamaica. She is a visiting Oncologist at the Turks and Caicos Island Hospital.
Sheray specializes in the treatment of patients with solid tumors, and aims to optimize cancer care in the Caribbean through research, risk reduction strategies, cancer screening, and early diagnosis advocacy.
